KNOW YOUR FOOD
At Purple Porch Co-op, we choose our products to serve our community with a full range of high-quality, fairly priced food, personal care and household products.
To meet these goals, we prioritize the following attributes when making our product choices:
a. Purple Porch defines “local” as products produced within 60 miles of our store - our "Michiana Neighbors"
b. We also use the definition of 300 miles to point out our Regional Midwest/Great Lakes food producers.
c. Check out our big list here (updated periodically)
2. CERTIFIED ORGANIC OR NATURALLY GROWN
a. USDA Certified Organic products
b. There is no USDA definition of the term “natural.” Purple Porch uses the label “naturally grown” to refer to local products that are produced without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.
3. COMMUNITY DEMAND
a. Products our Member-owners request.
b. Products which fulfill unique community needs.
4. PRODUCTS MADE AND/OR SOLD BY COOPERATIVES
5. Fair Trade Certified
6. humanely-raised, and/or cruelty-free
a. Examples include Jake's Country Meats and Hebron Farms and Ridge Lane Farms
=> Individual products may meet one or several of these standards. We encourage our customers to read product labels, and to contact manufacturers with questions about ingredients.
